> **The short answer**
> The best gift for a genealogist removes friction from research they already do: a system that keeps sources and searches organized, a records subscription they do not have, archival storage for originals, or your help scanning and labeling family photographs. Ask one quiet question first (which sites and software they use) so the gift fits their method instead of duplicating it.

Family historians are easy to buy for badly. A "family tree" mug says you noticed the hobby; a gift that saves them an evening of searching says you noticed the work.

## First, find out how they research

Three answers decide most gifts. You can usually get them in passing:

1. **Which websites do they use?** Ancestry, FamilySearch (free), MyHeritage, Findmypast, Newspapers.com.
2. **Do they use software,** such as Family Tree Maker or RootsMagic, or keep everything online?
3. **What are they stuck on?** An immigrant ancestor, a missing parent, a pile of unlabeled photographs.

## Gifts that organize the research

Most experienced researchers have more records than they can keep track of. An organizing system is a gift they will use every week.

- **A printable research binder.** Charts, ancestor records, source sheets, research logs and brick-wall worksheets that share one numbering system. It suits people who like paper or who use software but lose track of open questions.
- **Good binders and dividers.** Sturdy ring binders that open flat, large-label dividers, and acid-free sheet protectors for copies, never for fragile originals.
- **A spreadsheet workbook** for researchers who think in tables: people, sources, places and a research log they can filter.

**For the researcher who already builds the tree**
**The Complete Genealogy Library** — Five connected genealogy systems in one download: charts, The Ancestor File research binder, a presentation binder, a ten-ancestor family book and an immigrant-origins workbook. US Letter and A4.

## Gifts that open new records

- **A records subscription** they do not already have. Check first: duplicating an existing subscription is the most common wasted gift. Newspaper archives and country-specific sites often fill gaps that a general site does not.
- **A DNA test,** only if they want one and understand what it may reveal. Some people have already tested with one company; a test with a different company can add matches.
- **A society membership:** a state or county genealogical society, or a lineage or ethnic heritage society. Many include journals, record indexes and help from local experts.

## Gifts that protect what they have

- **Archival storage.** Acid-free boxes, folders and photo sleeves sized for their originals. Ask what they need to store before buying.
- **A scanning session.** Offer to scan a box of photographs together, then name the files properly. Our guide to [naming scanned family photo files](/name-scanned-family-photo-files) explains a system that lasts.
- **A backup drive,** set up together, with their tree and media on it. If they use Family Tree Maker, our [backup guide](/family-tree-maker-backup-media) shows how to include media.

## Gifts of time

The gift many family historians value most is company:

- **A research trip** to a courthouse, archive, cemetery or ancestral town, with you driving and photographing.
- **An interview** with an older relative, recorded and labeled. See [family history interviews](/family-history-interviews).
- **A finished page.** Pick one ancestor they have proved, and help turn the facts into a short illustrated story for the family.

---

**A smaller research gift**
**The Ancestor File** — A 61-page genealogy research system with charts, ancestor records, source sheets, logs, DNA and brick-wall pages, plus a filled-in example family. Instant download.

## Gifts to avoid

- **A pre-filled "family tree" from an online service** that has not been checked. Unverified trees spread errors through families.
- **Decorative charts with dozens of empty boxes** for someone who is past the beginner stage.
- **A second subscription to a site they already use.**

## How to give a printable genealogy gift

A digital gift can still feel like a gift. Print the first section, put it in a good binder with labeled dividers, and add a note. If you are short of time, a local copy shop can print and bind the PDF the same day. Wiserta files arrive by email straight after payment, so a printable gift works even on Christmas Eve.

## Questions about gifts for genealogists

### What do you get someone who has done genealogy for years?

Something that fits their method: a records source they lack, archival storage, or a research system for open questions. Ask what they are stuck on and choose a gift that helps with that.

### Is a DNA test a good gift for a genealogist?

Sometimes. Check which company they already tested with and whether they want to test at all. DNA results can reveal unexpected relationships, so it should be their choice.

### What is a good genealogy gift for a beginner?

A simple starting system: a few family-tree charts, a research log and a guide to where to begin. Our [where to start](/start-family-history-with-what-you-have) guide is a free first step.
